On April 29, 2008, Serbia signed a Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Communities and their Member States. The SAA will enter into force once it is confirmed by the Council of Ministers of the European Union and the European Parliament, and after ratification in all the signatory states, EU members.
An integral part of the Agreement is the Transitional Trade Agreement which has already entered into force and whose full application started on 1 February 2010. In February last year, Serbia began unilaterally to apply this trade agreement, and the EU was still in 2000. In the first half of the year, free customs duties from Serbia to the EU were allowed for most products. However, only now, with its full implementation, a real contractual relationship between Serbia and the EU was created.
Under this agreement, the EU and Serbia will gradually establish a free trade zone in accordance with the provisions of this agreement, for a period of up to six years, starting from the entry into force of the Interim Agreement. In addition to customs liberalization, the transitional agreement predicts the obligations of harmonizing rules in areas of importance for the trade of two parties, first of all: protection of competition, state aid, etc.
